This is a review of the desktop download version of the Bejeweled 2. There is an online version which is free but would have fewer features.

Many people by now have tried Bejeweled, a puzzle type game where you must match three or more gems to clear them from the board. The game has been around for several years and has many imitators.

So if the game has been around for years, what's new that makes it worth another look? Bejeweled 2 has retained the playing modes that made the original popular and added two new modes; puzzle and endless. They have also made two new kinds of super gems; the power gem and the hypercube. New music and backgrounds have also been added to the game.

Bejeweled is a matching game. You must match three or more gems on the board to clear them. You match gem by swapping two gems to create three of a kind. If there is no way left to match gems, you have lost the game.

Four basic modes of play

Classic
Action - the timed version where you must find matches before time runs out
Puzzle - new - clear each puzzle of all gems.
Endless - new - there is no limit to your score.

With the new version of the game, if you match four gems at a time, you get a power gem. Power gems retain the basic shape and colour of the original gem, but they have a bright centre. When you match a power gem with two basic gems of that type, The power gem will explode, taking the surrounding gems with it. If one of those happens to be another power gem, it will explode taking surrounding gems with it. When you get multiple explosions happening, the entire board seems to shake until things settle again.

The second new item is the hypercube. If you can match five gems at a time, you will get a hypercube, which no longers resembles an ordinary gem. Swapping a hypercube with any gem causes the hypercube to zap that gem across the board. A power gem is worth three times the number of points of a normal gem.

Additional features - you can unlock new games. One game is unlocked if you solve every puzzle in puzzle mode. I've heard that games are also unlocked from the classic and action modes, but I haven't managed to do that yet. The game saves your progress automatically. You can stop playing at any time and the game will save your game. When you return, you can resume that game or start a new one.

If you have played the first Bejeweled game and enjoyed it, then you really ought to download the currect version and try it. The new types of gems, the new puzzle mode, the additional games you can unlock means that Bejeweled 2 has advanced quite a bit.
